New Delhi | Vineet Sharan: During these times of lockdown, when everyone is restricted to their homes and working from homes, VPN technology is the most talked about thing.
So here’s a look at this technology, how does it work and what are its advantages and disadvantages.
What is VPN?
The full form of VPN is ‘Virtual Private Network’. It is a network technology that establishes secure connections in public networks such as the Internet and private networks such as WiFi. With the help of a VPN, your office server connects to your computer and laptop system. Then employees are able to work safely without putting company data on the open internet. However, it requires a good internet connection and this good connection should be in both the employee’s computer and the office server.
This technique protects data from hackers
VPN is a technology to secure the network and protect the confidential data from hackers. Private companies or government institutions that have a lot of important data secure it through a VPN. VPNs are mostly used in business, such as private companies, school websites.
This is how VPN technology works
A VPN is a server. Whenever you log into a server with a VPN, your internet connection becomes inscript. This does not let your ISP (Internet Service Provider) know which website you are using. The ISP can only know which VPN you are using. In this way, you also reach the websites which are blocked by the ISP. That is, the VPN comes between your Internet device and the Internet service provider.
There is a need to immediately introduce specific laws on inscript data.
Cyber expert Pawan Duggal explains that VPN is being used a lot due to work from home, but there is no law on VPN (inscript data) in the country. There is only Information Technology Act in the country, but there is not provisions about inscript data in it.
Inscript data has been discussed since 2008, but no policy has come even after 12 years. Whereas in December 2018, Australia had legislated for this. According to this law, if the company is operating in Australia and using a VPN, then its key has to be given to the government. In protest, many companies stopped working.
Using VPN during work from home increases threat of cybercrime
According to Pawan Duggal, the use of VPN during work from home can also increase corporate fraud and increase cybercrime. Employees of companies may start using it incorrectly. There are no cyber security laws and data protection laws in the country. This may harm companies. To avoid this, every company should prepare its policy for the use of work from home and VPN.
These types of corporates need to be more vigilant
According to Pawan Duggal, companies that employ sensitive client information have to be more vigilant. If their data is leaked then companies can get into trouble. Sensitive data includes credit cards, debit cards, health information, biometrics data, etc. Such as hospitals, medical testing labs, banks, insurance companies, finance companies need to be very cautious in work from home.
VPN is also used privately
Now let’s talk about personal use of VPN. Common users can also use VPNs on their mobiles, laptops and computers. With the help of VPN, they can open websites which are blocked in their country. Like China has blocked Facebook but VPNs can run Facebook there.
Download this way
For Mobile- There are many apps on the Google Play Store, on which VPN service is available for free, which you can download and use.
For Computers- You have to install free or paid VPN software on your computer. After installing the software one has to go to the side menu and click on settings. The privacy and security option of the setting requires ticking on the enabled VPN.
