Garbutt #business #robbed by two #men

Crime is so prevalent in Townsville that one local business considers itself “lucky” to go eight weeks without being robbed.

Two men remain on the run after an armed robbery at the West End Hotel’s Liquor Legends bottle shop, Garbutt.

About 8.15pm Wednesday a man entered the Ingham Road business and threatened a male staff member with a pair of scissors demanding cash.

A short time later, a second man outside the store signalled to the man and both offenders fled the scene with the money.

A staff member at the bottle shop, who did not wish to be named, said this type of offending was sadly the norm for the area.

“This is what it’s like living in Townsville at the moment,” they said.

“Every 4-6 weeks we get hit by crime … we had one a while ago where (the offender) used a flammable liquid.

“We sometimes get lucky and go eight weeks without an incident.

“It is ridiculous but it’s how the town and the suburb is going.”

The staff member threatened during the incident is safe and well but has been given several days off.

Both suspect men are described as Aboriginal, aged about 20, with one wearing a black hooded top and one wearing a grey hooded top.

Investigations are continuing to locate the offenders, anyone with information that could assist police with their inquiries should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Police Link on 131 444.

Meanwhile, it’s understood two men who robbed a tobacconist in Cranbrook on Tuesday morning also remain on the run.

The Free Choice tobacco store on Ross River Rd, Cranbrook was broken into at 12.45am with a large quantity of cigarettes stolen.

CCTV footage shows one man, with his face covered entering through a hole in the wall that connected the store to a neighbouring vacant block.

The alleged offenders kicked a whole in the wall and then likely used tools to create their entrance path.

Police released CCTV footage of the robbery in the hope of identifying the offenders.

It’s unknown if the incidents are linked.

Anyone with any information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
